3. Borax Anhydrous for Boronsilicate Glass Making
In borosilicate glass manufacturing, borax anhydrous has advantages over 5- and 10-mol borax.
Borax anhydrous has a higher bulk density and melts more rapidly, even with minimum energy. Borax anhydrous is also a source of sodium and can be used with boric acid or boric oxide to control the sodium oxide/boric oxide ratio in the glass.
Borax anhydrous can be used to formulate glasses with low thermal expansion (high thermal shock resistance) and good chemical durability. Borax anhydrous acts as both a flux and network former.
Borax anhydrous allows the formulation of low-melting glazes and enamels with the correct thermal expansion in glass and enamel production.
Borax anhydrous is used as a source of B2O3 in the manufacture of many different types of borosilicate glass, including:
1. Heat and chemical resistant glasses
2. Illumination glasses
3. Optical lenses
4. Medical and cosmetic containers
5. Hollow microspheres
6. Glass beads
In the manufacturing process, borax anhydrous can increase furnace productivity. It has a higher bulk density and melts more rapidly with minimum energy than borax (5 and 10 mol).
